What to do if you have worrying symptoms during the Covid-19 Pandemic
Many people are understandably concerned about visiting their GP during the current Covid pandemic. Although, it is good that most people are following the Government guidelines around staying at home and social distancing, it is important that this does not stop people getting medical advice when necessary.
There is increasing concern that some people may be ignoring potentially worrying symptoms that could be a sign of cancer or other significant health problems for fear of going to their GP practice. These might include:
- Unexplained Pain
- Unexplained bleeding eg – blood in poo, coughing up blood, blood in pee
- Unexplained weight loss
- Unexplained lump(s)
Diagnosing cancer early means that it is easier to treat and treatment is more likely to be successful.
All GP practices are still open, although many appointments are being carried out by telephone or video, without people having to go into the practice. Patients are reminded if they have any of the above symptoms, or any other symptoms that they are worried about, it is important to contact you GP practice and arrange a telephone or video consultation, in the first instance. This will allow your GP to assess your symptoms and discuss with you whether you need further investigations.
If you do need to have investigations or treatment urgently, all hospitals have developed new ways of working, aimed at minimizing any risk of contact with Covid-19.
IF YOU, OR SOMEONE CLOSE TO YOU HAS SYMPTOMS THEY ARE CONCERNED ABOUT, CONTACT YOUR GP PRACTICE FOR ADVICE.
Please take steps now to get connected to us through Patient Access. Due to the current situation we are triaging as many patients via telephone, video consult and online consultations. All of these services require Patient Access. You no longer have to come into the practice to get a letter to complete your registration. You can do it entirely online without a letter from the practice. Please visit https://www.patientaccess.com/ and connect yourself to our practice today. There are many other helpful things available to you through Patient Access as well such as ordering some prescriptions. Connect today!
THE WALK IN BLOOD CLINIC HAS BEEN CANCELLED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. PEOPLE WHO NEED BLOODS URGENTLY WILL BE SCHEDULED IN BY YOUR GP.

Like the common cold, coronavirus infection usually occurs through close contact with a person with novel coronavirus via cough and sneezes or hand contact. A person can also be infected by touching contaminated surfaces if they do not wash their hands. The risk of being in close contact with a person with coronavirus or contaminated surfaces is very low at the current time, as members of the public who have visited Wuhan or Hubei province, China are currently in isolation. Testing of suspected coronavirus cases is carried out in line with strict regulations. This means that suspected cases are kept in isolation, away from public areas of the hospital and returned home also in isolation. Any equipment that come into contact with suspected cases are thoroughly cleaned as appropriate. Specific guidance has also been shared with NHS staff to help safeguard them and others.
Patients can be reassured that their safety is a top priority. Everyone is being reminded to follow Public Health England advice to:
• Always carry tissues with you and use them to catch your cough or sneeze. Then bin the tissue, and wash your hands, or use a sanitiser gel.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after using public transport. Use a sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
• Avoid close contact with people who are unwell.
You can find the latest information and advice from Public Health England at Further information is available on https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/.
